There are two ‘metallic’ temples in Kyoto. Ginkakuji (Official Site | Wikipedia) is the silver one. While not as famous as Kinkakuji, the golden temple, it’s still a popular attraction. While Kinkakuji is covered in false gold, giving it a very impressive appearance, Ginkakuji never got a similar silver treatment as it was never properly finished. It retains its slightly unfinished appearance today.
The temple gardens are renowned for their traditional beauty.
Ginkakuji can be accessed by direct bus number 5, 17 or 100 from Kyoto Station in about 35-40 minutes.
Alternatively, you can reach Ginkakuji by foot along the Philosopher’s Path which runs from Ginkakuji Temple to/from Nanzenji Temple in about 30-45 minutes.
